what is it?

Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin® are FDA-approved injectables known as neuromodulators. They work by relaxing the muscles that cause dynamic facial expressions—like frowning, squinting, or raising your eyebrows—softening fine lines and helping prevent deeper wrinkles from forming. These treatments deliver natural-looking results and are trusted worldwide for both cosmetic and therapeutic use.

How It Works

Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin® contain botulinum toxin type A, which temporarily blocks nerve signals to the treated muscles. When these muscles stop contracting, the skin above them smooths out, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Over time, this also helps prevent new lines from forming.

Though similar, each product has unique characteristics. Dysport® diffuses slightly more, making it ideal for broader areas like the forehead, while Xeomin® is a “naked” neurotoxin with no added proteins, which may reduce the risk of resistance over time. Your provider will choose the best option based on your goals, anatomy, and treatment history.

What Should I Expect?

Before your appointment, avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications or supplements for at least 2 weeks to reduce bruising risk.

Plan your treatment at least 2–3 weeks before any important events.

Inform your provider of any medications or health conditions, especially if you take antibiotics, aminoglycosides, or have muscle or nerve disorders.

Avoid scheduling if you have an active skin infection or inflammation near the treatment area.

Keep in mind that full effects may take up to 12 days to appear, and multiple treatments may be needed for optimal results.

Your provider will inject Botox or Dysport using a fine needle into the targeted muscles. You may feel slight discomfort or a mild pinch.

Treatment is quick and generally well-tolerated, with minimal downtime. You might experience mild swelling, redness, or small bumps at injection sites, which typically resolve within hours to a few days.

after

To ensure the best results, remain upright and avoid lying down for at least 6 hours after your injections.

Actively contract the treated muscles by frowning, smiling, or raising your eyebrows during this time to help the product settle properly.

Do not rub, massage, or apply pressure to the treated areas for at least 24 hours to avoid spreading the toxin to unintended muscles.

Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, heat (such as saunas or hot tubs), and blood-thinning medications or supplements for 24–48 hours to minimize bruising and swelling.

Temporary side effects may include bruising, redness, headache, mild numbness, or drooping of nearby muscles, which generally resolve on their own.
